I think we should take a wait and see attitude. Perhaps a fortuitous mutation will reduce their utility as fuel. Perhaps a previously front-loaded potentiality will be actualized and will make them so irresistably cute that no one can kill them.
Actually, I see this as a moral statement. We've already taken to killing the unborn at will, so now it's time to do away with the symbol of fertility itself. Fertility bad, natural fuels good.
