I recall Pinker as evolutionary psychologist and an ally of Daniel Dennett and Richard Dawkins in evolutionary disputes. He believes language evolved by natural selection as a Darwinian adaptation. Perhaps he is realizing he is being left behind philosophically and is trying to change the subject.
More people are speculating about free-will, purposeful adaptation and consciousness as an aspect of reality. Personally I like the following web site for such speculations
I can consider the role of purposeful organization and remain agnostic about the participation of some deity. Plato reportedly said more than two thousand years ago, “The universe is a single living creature that encompasses all living creatures within it.” I prefer to think of myself as an active participant in a creative universe, rather than a passive observer of a mechanical reality.
