ISU Sociologist Nails Avalos
by bipodDavid Schweingruber has written an insightful letter to the Iowa State Daily, pointing out among other things that Gonzalez was not explicitly attacked in the actual petition. That's true, especially for those who had no idea that Gonzalez was being singled out. What Schweingruber goes on to say doesn't bode well for the Avalos/Patterson agenda. These are beautiful thoughts:
"Perhaps we've been the victim of a bait-and-switch. Teaching Intelligent Design in public school science classes is a national issue, and I suspect many faculty had this in mind when they signed the petition. Then Hector Avalos, our outspoken village atheist, has used their names in his battle against Gonzalez."
"What is Avalos' objection to Gonzalez's work? He told The Des Moines Register that knows Intelligent Design is religion and not science because, "I'm a biblical scholar." So Iowa State has one thing in common with unaccredited Bible colleges and medieval heresy tribunals - our Bible scholars think they can tell our astronomers how to do their jobs."

I've got to comment on this, as this is too funny:
Ouch! That's about good a slam down as I've ever seen!
When a sociology professor will put down a fellow faculty member that way publicly, one knows Avalos is not being looked on too kindly by some.
I think you're right bipod, the strategy is backfiring on Avalos, however, I'm still very concerned for Guilermo's future. I can only wish Dr. G the best.

One of the responses on Dr. Schweingruber's letter that I find insightfull:
"And your identification of Dr. Avalos was fitting, I think. He apparently still hasn't realized that he is simply the atheistic version of the Christian "fundamentalist" whom he so deplores."

Whatever Avalos' strategy is (and I have yet to see anything on that issue other than unsupported allegations by IDists), I guess this means Gonzalez doesn't have to be quaking in fear about his impending martyrdom after all.
