Yet Another Open Thread

by Joy

Sh*t, p*ss, c*nt, f*ck, cocks*cker, motherf*cker and tits.

The Seven Deadly Words, all but one of which still require asterisks in 2008 on public inter-tubes forums. What an earth-shattering bit of comedy that was all those years ago!

An inspiration to millions and what my friend Bill Hamilton (Boss Clown at Ringling) approvingly pronounced, "F*cking Funny." His own words, used at the close of every show…

"Take care of yourself. And take care of someone else."

R.I.P. George Carlin.

Carlin was a great comedian with an affection for balloons who has now expired due to a terminal episode and negative patient care outcome.

    May he rest in peace.

    Plus he had great gams.

Yeah, I think that [s/he was THAT old?] inevitably as my erstwhile "peers" die off, one by one. We will all die in the end. That is the way of things, and why the nature of who and what we are is seemingly so 'important'.

The attempt to strip it of meaning is… cruel and unnecessary. Like state-sponsored torture, post-9/11. Is this what our so-valued "freedom" has engendered in our names?

I want no part of it. And I actually do know Paul Newman.

Carlin was certainly a great comedian, but there always seemed to be a flaw in his most famous routine. Is it really fair to call f*ck and motherf*cker separate naughty words? I can't see ever making it OK to say motherf*cker without also allowing you to say f*ck, or vice versa. It is the core essence of f*ck and certainly not the motherly focus that keeps this word on the naughty list. For example, now that we are so enlightened that its OK to say tits would I get bleeped on TV if I said mothertits? I think not, but I may be wrong.

PS: I heard from the the most reputable source on American culture I know of, South Park, that its OK to say sh*t on TV so long as its a fleeting expletive, or something like that. Plus didn't Cher say "f*ck" on TV during prime-time once? We're so progressive, we'll be saying Belgium any day now!

Carlin was great. Grew up listening to his tapes, along with Eddie Murphy and Sam Kinison's routines. Angry guy, but hey. You try being Mister Conductor for awhile and see how well-mannered you turn out to be.

Yes, robin, I'm well aware of Carlin's religion routines (Kinison's, frankly, were scores better). Just because I disagreed with him doesn't mean I don't think he was damn hilarious.

You're a failure at trolling.

But here's some truly classic Carlin. I preferred his bit with going sport by sport and judging whether they qualify as such, but his presentation here is top notch.

I was surprised that a comedian who swore a bluestreak on stage would be hired to be a narrator for a children's show (ah the things one learns raising a young son ). Just goes to show you stereotypes were meant to be smashed.

P.S. I thought Carliln was the second best narrator the show had

Last thing I saw Carlin do was the role of "The Architect" (Matrix spoof) in Scary Movie 2. When my kids were little we had a whole album of children's stories as told by Boris Karloff (of 'Frankenstein' fame). He had a great voice…

But then again, I also recall Michael Landon was a teenage werewolf before he was Little Joe Cartwright…

C'mon Alan. That's juvenile name calling and appealing to the approval of the mob. It it were about legitimate criticsm they might reply to comments about protein sequence space or something substantive. And do it directly to the person the comment is directed at. The swamp is a haven for personal gossip and the 'let me show you how clever my put downs are' antics.

    Hi Raevmo,

robin has been a bit quiet lately. (s)he didn't get banned did (s)he? I seem to recall Mike saying that he wouldn't do that.

I was waiting to see who would be the first to bring this up.

No, this is what I wrote on June 22nd, 2008 at 11:11 pm:

BTW robin, I think it is rather obvious you are keiths. And pay attention to this "“ even though I think this, I don't advocate that you be banned.

    Note the present tense.

At the time, I did not know he was keiths; I just believed it to be the case. And I did not say I wouldn't ban keiths; I said that I did not advocate banning him at the time that I wrote that. And I clearly said "Pay attention to this." In other words, keiths was being given a second chance. He was being allowed to post when he knew that we thought he was who he was. How would he react to this act of courtesy?

I noted several times the thread was more disruptive than productive and generated more heat than light. I noted that I had to institute a new rule solely because of him. Even other critics criticized what he was doing. He didn't take all the hints and move on. Instead, he aggressively dug in his heels and expanded his attacks, even to the point of wanting to relive his original banning and condemn Bradford and Guts. He generated a flame war and there was no end in sight.

He had a second chance to post here knowing that we believed he was who he was. He had a chance to show us how he would conduct himself once allowed back in. And he gave us this. Crystal clear.

If he had reciprocated on the act of courtesy, dropped it all, and moved on to respectful discussions of issues other than TT members, he'd still be here. But he didn't and was thus banned a second time, this time for his mean-spirited and disruptive behavior.

If someone opposes the banning because you either approve of what he was trying to do in that thread or you think we are somehow obligated to tolerate such behavior, now is the time to go on record and say so in this open thread.

I'm personally amenable to seeing first rate critiques of ID creation science hosted and published.

In fact I offered to build a website for a very skilled and fair critic of YEC — a physicist by the name of Gerrad Jellison….he declined to be the administrator of the webpages, but gave his blessing for me to promote his writings, which I intend to do. I'll be promoting his work at this website being developed by various individuals including myself:

    http://www.idcsnetwork.com/

In my view, hecklers and flame warriors don't help clarify the invesitgation and settle the questions. They can occasionally provide batting practice for the art of debate and editorial review. But for the most part they merely jam meaningful communication. This is a useful tactic if one does not have good arguments…shut the debate down altogether by any means possible….even by spamming and jamming blogs and forums.

I was pleased to see the emergence of UD and TT. It did a lot to thwart the spam and jam tactics of the critics.

Regarding Robin, he said some things about me personally. I suppose he had more interest in proving to the world I'm a scoundrel than whether my ideas are correct. I'm just a ID mischief maker on the net. If my ideas are so poorly conceived and presented, he ought to have better things to do in life than try to be part of the thought police of cyberspace. And there probably worse scoundrels in the world than myself that he should be hunting….

In anycase, because of my in debtedness to the work of Mike Gene, I will endeavor to promote Mike's work at the IDCS Network. Mike is not a creationist, but I think it is important that creationists have a grasp of what evolutionary theory states. They can learn a lot about mainstream ideas and ID through Mike Gene's Design Matrix, as he compares and contrasts his bunny version of ID with the mainstream non-teleological views…..

By the way, Mike, I don't have an explanation to the visitors of IDCS Network about your bunny obsession. Does this have to do with Alice in Wonderland?
So far today, I have received 39 pieces of personal … mail … Four of them have included death threats
http://scienceblogs.com/pharyn...

I do not know if Myers is telling the truth or not, but the point is that we do NOT attack the naturalistic monopoly on though (in public schools and other public forums) with death threats or violence. We do need to be proactive but we also need to be civilized.
Original: DaveScot
It’s just a matter of time before someone with a terminal disease, a month left to live, decides he hasn’t got anything to lose by taking out Myers along with him.
http://www.uncommondescent.com...

These kinds of ideas are NOT acceptable and while DaveScot may not wish harm on Myers, there could be crazy people out there that might get bad ideas from him and do something stupid. This kind of behavior from DaveScot is NOT acceptable and it is not how we should go about attacking the naturalistic monopoly on thought in public forums. Again, we need to be proactive, but we need to be civilized as well.

Though I seem to be banned from uncommondescent (for no apparent reason) I hope the moderators there read this.
